Shirley Rufener, CPD
Shirley began "creating" at around age 6, in her art classes at school, and was able to take painting lessons after school while in Junior High. After winning a Bank of America Art Achievement Award in High School, she went on to attend two years of college, where she met and married her best friend Dwayne, who began supporting her craft "hobby" for many years, before seeing any profit. Thanks again honey!
She discovered polymer clay at a local craft bazaar and began working (playing) with the clay in 1985 as one of the pioneers of the medium. Since her 1 inch tall seasonal/holiday bear collection that she sold through a shop in Old Sacramento, CA took off, she was hooked! She now has many years of experience teaching her original techniques through her book, "Polymer Clay Mixed Media Jewelry" and her Craft E-Books and Craft E-Tutes. She's taught workshops at retreats, Michael's and various other craft stores as well as art and craft technique demonstrations.
After appearing on a few episodes of The Carol Duvall show, The Creative Life (on PBS) and HSN, Shirley had the opportunity to become the AM Northwest TV morning show's "craft expert" on KATU, the ABC affiliate, demonstrating a different craft every month for 15 years. She shares art and craft techniques with a variety of mixed media materials, although she admits that polymer clay is her passion. She is currently planning on adding many free videos to her YouTube channel, "Shirley Rufener".
Shirley had her first website up and running in 2004. What you now see is her new, and hopefully improved SPUMONI website. She has uploaded her TV show projects with instructions and photos, and in the last few years has added her actual AMNW TV videos to the site, to view for free any time.
Shirley is a lifetime CPD (Certified Professional Demonstrator) through the Craft and Hobby Association and a freelance designer. She has demonstrated at trade shows such as CHA and Stitches. Her projects have been displayed in the CHA Designers Showroom, as well as graced the walls and tabletop displays of manufacturers booths she has designed for.
Shirley wrote her first full-sized book, "Polymer Clay Mixed Media Jewelry" published by Krause (a div. of F&W Publications) in 2009. She has written five fashion oriented craft booklets, two of them on polymer clay jewelry, has co-authored a booklet on air-dry clay accessories and has contributed projects to over a dozen other booklets. Her projects have appeared in a plethora of magazine articles, some have even made it on the covers! Her how-to articles have been featured in Polymer Café (her “Artlamp” was the cover project for the Premier issue), Altered Couture, Haute Handbags, Doll Designs, Jewelry Design, Quick & Easy Crafts, Wearable Wonders, Wearable Crafts and Southwest Crafts.
Shirley believes that everyone is creative and should try new things until they find a creative outlet. She loves teaching others the fun of crafting as a hobby, to create handmade gifts or even turning their hobby into a business. She shares, that “if people can earn a living at what they love to do, they will never have to work another day in their life”. Shirley enjoys living on the beautiful Oregon Coast with the love of her life, her husband Dwayne. She will always be a wife first, and a proud "Mamma" to her very talented daughter Joy, an Art Therapist, and her successful son Daniel, a Computer Software Engineer.
